São Cucufate Roman Remains

Abandoned in the middle of the 5th century the building was used at some point in the Late Middle Ages as a monastery consecrated to São Cucufate. The occupation of Beja during the period of the wars between Moors and Christians led to the abandonment of the monastery, but it was restored to the canons of the church of Sáo Vicente de Fora in Lisbon.

The apsidal space at the north end of the villa was then used for the church and decorated with murals. These have been renovated at different times.
